The 2018 ODV Footy Tipping Comp has begun!!
To all our regular tipsters Darren and I welcome you back and to all the new tipsters that have joined us, I hope you have as much fun as we do running this footy tipping comp.
As usual Darren and myself will give you our weekly tips and thoughts for each game and on the Monday give you a wrap up with ‘The Numbers that Count”.
Tipping is expected to be a very hard task this year, but remember not all favourites win. In fact last season the team who was favoured to win lost 33% of the time, meaning at least 3 upsets per round!!!
Darren is currently overseas on a work conference so looks like I get the job of trying to pick first round winners, like finding a needle in a hay stack I shall try my best..
So let's get going and have a look at the first round.
Richmond v Carlton
These 2 teams have played in the season opener every year since 2008 (with the exception of 2014). It’s been 17 years since a premiership side has opened the round so the AFL has finally given the people what they want. Richmond have won the last 6 and this year will be no exception. Tigers have a few Premiership players out, but this will make no difference playing the defenceless Blues.
Tigers by 38pts
Essendon v Adelaide
Friday night footy at its finest, This game should be a RIPPER and it’s a much anticipated game for me, after travelling to the MCG to watch the Crows falter last year I am expecting another great season and a top 2 finish (fingers are always crossed to get that premiership).. anywhos.. This will be a close game, with Adelaide just being favourites. Both teams have some big names out for this game and we will see Bryce Gibbs wearing his new colours along with Doedee and Fogarty, who make their AFL game debuts. The Bombers have trade grabs Stringer, Smith and Saad debuting in the Black and Red. I think the bombers fans will see great things this year and whilst this will be close, I’m a sucker for heart overhead tipping…

For those of you who haven’t already seen this video, hit the link and watch Ricciuto’s top 5 moments. A hit like number 2 or 3 would have a player out for 6 weeks now days!
Fantastic Five: Ricciuto's best moments
St Kilda v Brisbane
Last year it was a tossup between St Kilda and Melbourne over who was the most improved and Saints just didn’t quite live up to expectations. This year they will be without Riewoldt and Montagna so time for the younger players to step up. Brisbane can’t get any worse after getting the wooden spoon last year and with big Luke Hodge playing for them this year, they will at least win the free kick count. Brisbane don’t travel well so I will be tipping the home team in this one.
Saints by 27pts
Port Adelaide v Fremantle
I have already heard Port won the flag again this year… I gotta give it to their supporters they are a positive lot and with that recruiting spree how can they not: Rockliff, Watts, Thomas, Trengrove and Motlop all the players no other team wanted. Looks like Nat Fyfe is in Brownlow Medal form and if he stays fit should give the competition a run for their money, if this was being played in WA I would of tipped the Purple haze for the 4 points.
Peaaaar by 19pts
Gold Coast v North Melbourne
I’m not sure how many people would waste their Saturday night watching this game. However, with no Ablett this season I think the Suns might just improve, new attitude and another new coach. I think Stewey Dew will be great for the Suns and I can see them finishing around 8-11th spot this year. The Roo’s will have a lot to prove but playing in Canberra in 28 degree heat with 28% humidity will be very tough.
Suns by 21pts
Hawthorn v Collingwood
Everyone but Hawks fans loved the season Hawthorn has last year and we all love seeing Collingwood sign Bucks on for another year of coaching as we know they won’t make the finals it’s a win win.
I think this is a bit of a coin toss ..
Hawks by 15pts
Greater Western Sydney v Western Bulldogs
Last year the Dogs proved winning the GF in 2016 was just a fluke. GWS were premiership fav’s and they got kicked out in another Prelim Final. Will they make the big dance this year or is this a new trend for the AFL’s baby? Cameron and Patton to kick a bag full each.
GWS by 24pts
Melbourne v Ablett, Dangerfield and Selwood
Probably the most anticipated game of the round see’s the Dees v Geelong. Geelong has the “Holy Trinity” playing for them and unless you have been living under a rock you would know Gary Ablett is back at Geelong and is most likely set to play. Dangerfield is looking unfit to play but that bloke could play with one leg and still carve up the field, so I am expecting him to play. Being played at the MCG brings Melbourne into contention, they have such a good line up if they could pull some consistency together they will make finals for sure. I’m hoping to see some hard at the ball contests and a close score line.
Dees by 9pts
West Coast v Sydney
Last game of the round sees Eagles v Sydney at the new Optus Oval in WA and from what I’ve seen the stadium looks amazing, I’ve heard some complaints about the walkway not being finished and some kerfuffle with the lights being in your eyes but the WA crowds are an interesting lot and can work with any surrounding they are thrown in. The Swans are lacking a ruckman so much so that Kurt Tippet was considering coming out of long time retirement to help his old mates out. Sydney coped most of his contracted years without him playing so think they can manage just fine. Josh Kennedy looks to be out for the Eagles so who will kick their goals? This should be a tightly matched battle until the Swans blow it open in the 4th quarter to take the first win at the new oval.
Swans by 27pts
Good luck Tipsters and enjoy the opening round.
Go Crows! .
